The Federal District is currently divided into 29 "Regiões Administrativas" ("RA" for short) or "Administrative Regions".
The Federal District was originally undivided, but it was split into 8 Administrative Regions in 1964. In 1989 four new regions were created, bringing the total to 12. From 1992 to 1994 seven additional divisions were created which resulted in 19 regions, a number which lasted from 1994 to 2003. From 2003 to 2005 ten new administrative regions were created, bringing the number to 29.
The fact that RA-I is called "Brasilia" causes some confusion. Many believe that the "city of Brasilia" is just the area corresponding to RA-I, and consider the other RAs as one city each. Other people (including the author of this website) believe that the city of Brasilia includes the urban areas of all the 29 Administrative Regions.
